Καταστρέφεται η θαλάσσια ζωή από την οξίνιση των ωκεανών

Τον κώδωνα του κινδύνου κρούουν οι επιστήμονες και κάνουν επείγουσα έκκληση για να σταματήσουν οι εκπομπές του διοξειδίου του άνθρακα αφού τα παγκόσμια θαλάσσια οικοσυστήματα κινδυνεύουν σοβαρά από την οξίνιση των ωκεανών, σύμφωνα με δημοσίευμα του περιοδικού Focus.
Περισσότεροι από 150 κορυφαίοι θαλάσσιοι ερευνητές ένωσαν τις ανησυχίες τους στη «Διακήρυξη του Μονάχου» η οποία προειδοποιεί ότι οι μεταβολές στην οξύτητα είναι επιταχυνόμενες.

Η διακήρυξη στηρίζεται σε συμπεράσματα πρόσφατης διεθνούς συνάντησης κορυφής. Σύμφωνα με αυτή, τα επίπεδα PH αλλάζουν 100 φορές πιο γρήγορα από τη φυσική ευμεταβλησία.

Βασισμένη σε ερευνητικές προτεραιότητες όπως τέθηκαν στο Συμπόσιο «Ο Ωκεανός σε έναν Κόσμο με Υψηλό CO2» που πραγματοποιήθηκε τον Οκτώβριο του 2008, η διακήρυξη δηλώνει:

«Εμείς, οι επιστήμονες που συναντηθήκαμε στο Μόναχο για να επανεξετάσουμε όσα είναι γνωστά για την οξίνιση των ωκεανών, διακηρύττουμε ότι ανησυχούμε βαθιά από τις πρόσφατες, ταχείες αλλαγές στη χημεία των ωκεανών και τις προοπτικές, εντός των επόμενων δεκαετιών, να επηρεάσουν σοβαρά τους θαλάσσιους οργανισμούς, τα τροφικά δίκτυα, τη βιοποικιλότητα και την αλιεία».

Καλεί τους υπευθύνους να σταθεροποιήσουν τις εκπομπές διοξειδίου του άνθρακα «σε ένα ασφαλές επίπεδο ώστε να αποφύγουμε όχι μόνο την επικίνδυνη κλιματική αλλαγή αλλά και την επικίνδυνη οξίνιση των ωκεανών».

Οι ερευνητές προειδοποιούν ότι η οξίνιση των ωκεανών, στην οποία αναφέρονται ως «το άλλο πρόβλημα του CO2», θα μπορούσε να καταστήσει τις περισσότερες ωκεάνιες περιοχές αφιλόξενες για τους κοραλλιογενείς υφάλους μέχρι το 2050, αν συνεχιστούν να αυξάνονται τα επίπεδα διοξειδίου του άνθρακα στην ατμόσφαιρα.

Επισημαίνουν επίσης ότι αυτό θα οδηγούσε σε ουσιώδεις αλλαγές στα εμπορικά αποθέματα ψαριών, απειλώντας την διατροφική ασφάλεια εκατομμυρίων ανθρώπων. «Η χημεία είναι τόσο θεμελιώδης και οι αλλαγές τόσο γρήγορες και σοβαρές που οι επιπτώσεις στους οργανισμούς φαίνονται αναπόφευκτες», εξηγεί ο Dr James Orr, πρόεδρος του συμποσίου. «Το ερωτήματα πλέον είναι πόσο άσχημα θα είναι τα πράγματα και πόσο σύντομα θα πραγματοποιηθούν».

Ο Patricio Bernal, εκτελεστικός γραμματέας της Διακυβερνητικής Ωκεανογραφικής Επιτροπής του ΟΗΕ που συνυπογράφει το κείμενο, τόνισε πώς σκοπεύει να αντιδράσει στην πρόκληση η επιστημονική κοινότητα που ασχολείται με τη θαλάσσια έρευνα. «Χρειάζεται να ενώσουμε τους καλύτερους επιστήμονες για να μοιραστούν τα τελευταία ερευνητικά αποτελέσματά τους και να θέσουν προτεραιότητες στην έρευνα ώστε να βελτιώσουμε τις γνώσεις μας για τις διαδικασίες και τις επιπτώσεις της οξίνισης στα θαλάσσια οικοσυστήματα».
