Μία τσιγγάνα μου ‘χε πει πως είναι απ’ το Αϊβαλί
κι εγώ θυμήθηκα τα λόγια του παππού μου.
Στη Σμύρνη έφτιαχνε γλυκά και η γιαγιά μπαχαρικά
μέσα στο σπίτι του πατέρα του δικού μου.

Τα χρόνια που ‘μουν πιο μικρός, αναρρωτιόμουν συνεχώς
γιατί ‘χε πάντα το μπαούλο γυαλισμένο.

κι είδα το βλέμμα το στερνό του φοβισμένο.

Στην Πόλη στην Αγιά Σοφιά, δακρύζει πάντα η Παναγιά
γι’ αυτούς που έφυγαν διωγμένοι μες στα πλοία.
Στην Πόλη στην Αγιά Σοφιά, ακόμα καίει μια φωτιά
γιατί μεμέτηδες δανείζονται τα θεία.

Έφυγε δίχως παιδεμό, μα έζησε ξεριζωμό
αυτήν την λέξη την πρωτάκουσα στα έξι.
Είχα ρωτήσει να μου πει την ιστορία απ’ την αρχή
κι όπως μιλούσε έσταζε αίμα η κάθε λέξη.

Γι’ αυτό το άνοιξα κι εγώ το κασελάκι το παλιό
κι είδα τα λίγα που ‘χε πάρει, τα κρυμμένα.
Κανέλα, σμύρνα και νερό απ’ τα παράλια θαρρώ
και λίγο χώμα από τα μέρη τα κλεμμένα.
