Το χρήμα ανακουφίζει (και) από τον φυσικό πόνο!

Ακόμα και το άγγιγμα του χρήματος είναι αρκετό για να απαλύνει τον φυσικό πόνο, σύμφωνα με μια νέα κινεζο-αμερικανική επιστημονική έρευνα. Όπως διαπιστώθηκε, το απλό άγγιγμα χαρτονομισμάτων ή, αντίστροφα, η σκέψη και μόνο των εξόδων που κάποιος έχει κάνει, είναι σε θέση να επηρεάσει θετικά ή αρνητικά τη σωματική και συναισθηματική ανθεκτικότητα των ανθρώπων.

Η έρευνα έγινε από κινέζους ψυχολόγους του πανεπιστημίου Σουν Γιατ-Σεν της Κίνας (με επικεφαλής τον Xinyue Zhou) και οικονομολόγους του πανεπιστημίου της Μινεσότα (υπό την Kathleen Vohs) και δημοσιεύτηκε στο περιοδικό "Psychological Science" (Ψυχολογική Επιστήμη). Σύμφωνα με τους ερευνητές, τα πορίσματά της μελέτης μπορούν να εξηγήσουν καλύτερα γιατί μερικοί άνθρωποι εθίζονται στη ζωή τους να κάνουν όλο και περισσότερα χρήματα.

Σε ένα πείραμα, προκειμένου να ελεγχθεί η ανθεκτικότητα των ανθρώπων στον φυσικό πόνο, 96 εθελοντές χωρίστηκαν σε δύο ομάδες, εκ των οποίων στους μεν δόθηκαν χαρτονομίσματα για να μετρήσουν, στους δε απλά χαρτιά. Όταν στη συνέχεια τους ζητήθηκε να βουτήξουν τα δάχτυλά τους σε πολύ ζεστό νερό (με θερμοκρασία 50 βαθμών Κελσίου), διαπιστώθηκε ότι όσοι προηγουμένως είχαν μετρήσει χρήματα, δήλωσαν κατά μέσο όρο ότι αισθάνθηκαν σαφώς λιγότερο πόνο σε σχέση με όσους είχαν πριν μετρήσει απλά χαρτιά.

Για να ελέγξουν αν τα χαρτονομίσματα απλώς αποτέλεσαν μια πηγή διάσπασης της προσοχής των εθελοντών, η οποία έτσι απομακρύνθηκε από το αίσθημα του πόνου, οι ερευνητές έκαναν και άλλα πειράματα στη συνέχεια, στα οποία ζητήθηκε από τους συμμετέχοντες (πάλι χωρισμένους σε δύο ομάδες) να γράψουν οι μεν τα έξοδα που έκαναν τον προηγούμενο μήνα, οι δε απλώς για τον καιρό. Όταν στη συνέχεια πάλι βούτηξαν το χέρι τους στο καυτό νερό, όσοι είχαν αναγκαστεί να θυμηθούν τα χρήματα που χάλασαν σε διάφορες δαπάνες, είχαν μειωμένη αντοχή στον πόνο σε σχέση με όσους είχαν γράψει για κάτι άσχετο όπως ο καιρός.

Σύμφωνα με τους ερευνητές, "τα πειράματα επιβεβαίωσαν τη δύναμη του χρήματος, ακόμα και ως συμβόλου, να αλλάζει τις αντιλήψεις πολύ πραγματικών αισθημάτων όπως ο πόνος".

Η νέα έρευνα ενισχύει τα πορίσματα προηγούμενων ερευνών ότι η επίδραση του χρήματος στα συναισθήματά μας πηγάζει από την πανάρχαια δύναμή του ως συμβόλου κοινωνικής αποδοχής και στάτους σε μια κοινωνία και σχετίζεται με τον τρόπο που ο ανθρώπινος εγκέφαλος εξελίχτηκε για να επεξεργάζεται τις κοινωνικές σχέσεις.

Μια προηγούμενη έρευνα από τον καναδό ψυχολόγο Τζέοφ ΜακΝτόναλντ του πανεπιστημίου του Τορόντο και τον αμερικανό ψυχολόγο Μαρκ Λίρι του πανεπιστημίου Ντιουκ έχει δείξει ότι υπάρχει άμεση σχέση ανάμεσα στο συναισθηματικό και το σωματικό πόνο. Άρα αν κάποιος έχει "δυναμώσει" ψυχικά μέσα ακόμα και από το απλό άγγιγμα των χρημάτων, νιώθει λιγότερο τον φυσικό πόνο, ενώ αντίστροφα αν κάποιος έχει χαλάσει πολλά χρήματα, τείνει να πονά περισσότερο και στο σώμα του.

Μια άλλη έρευνα από τον ψυχολόγο Έντουαρντ Ντέκι του αμερικανικού πανεπιστημίου του Ρότσεστερ έχει δείξει ότι όσοι αισθάνονται την κοινωνική απόρριψη (ψυχικό τραύμα) ή έχουν κάποιο φυσικό τραύμα, νιώθουν μεγαλύτερη επιθυμία για χρήματα, αν και η ικανοποίηση που προσφέρει το χρήμα σε αυτούς τους ανθρώπους είναι τελικά επιφανειακή και δεν διαρκεί.
