To φαινόμενο placebo δεν περιορίζεται στα ψευδοφάρμακα -την ίδια θεραπευτική επίδραση μπορεί να έχει η φροντίδα και η ζεστή συμπεριφορά των γιατρών, υποδεικνύει νέα μελέτη στην επιθεώρηση Lancet. Φαίνεται ότι η πίστη στις ικανότητες του γιατρού συχνά αρκεί για να τονώσει τους μηχανισμούς άμυνας του οργανισμού.

Εδώ και αιώνες, οι γιατροί γνωρίζουν ότι πολλοί ασθενείς παρουσιάζουν πραγματική βελτίωση όταν νομίζουν ότι παίρνουν κάποιο φάρμακο, ενώ στην πραγματικότητα αυτό που λαμβάνουν είναι ένα βιολογικά αδρανές χάπι.

Οι ασθενείς όμως μπορεί να υποβάλλονται στη ιδέα ότι θα βελτιωθούν όχι μόνο από τα ψευδοφάρμακα, αλλά και από πολλές άλλες ιατρικές πρακτικές, δείχνει η νέα μελέτη, η οποία βασίστηκε σε ανασκόπηση παλαιότερων ερευνών για το φαινόμενο placebo που χρονολογούνται ακόμα και στη δεκαετία του 1700.

Για παράδειγμα, μια από αυτές τις έρευνες είχε δείξει ότι οι ασθενείς βελτιώνονται περισσότερο όταν τους γίνεται μια ένεση από έναν γιατρό, από ό,τι αν τους κάνει την ένεση μια αυτόματη αντλία.
Μια άλλη έρευνα έδειχνε ότι οι ασθενείς που λάμβαναν κάποιο αναλγητικό, το οποίο αργότερα αντικαταστάθηκε από ψευδοφάρμακο, συνέχιζαν να αισθάνονται λιγότερο πόνο.

«Οι περισσότεροι άνθρωποι θεωρούν πως το placebo είναι ένα φαινόμενο που συμβαίνει σε ορισμένους ανθρώπους όταν λαμβάνουν μια ψεύτικη θεραπεία, συνήθως στο πλαίσιο μελετών για την αποτελεσματικότητα μιας νέας θεραπείας» σχολίασε στο AFP ο Ντέιμιεν Φίνις του Πανεπιστημίου του Σίδνεϊ, επικεφαλής της διεθνούς ερευνητικής ομάδας.

«Εμείς προχωρήσαμε πέρα από αυτό [...] Η έρευνά μας αποκαλύπτει ότι φαινόμενα placebo μπορούν να εμφανιστούν σε ιατρικές πρακτικές ρουτίνας και σε ένα μεγάλο εύρος παθήσεων -και αυτά τα φαινόμενα μπορεί να έχουν ισχυρό θεραπευτικό αποτέλεσμα» ανέφερε.

Διευκρίνισε, πάντως, ότι για να δει κανείς αυτή βελτίωση πρέπει να έχει πίστη στις ικανότητες του γιατρού.
