Ενθουσιασμός στη NASA για το διπλό βομβαρδισμό της Σελήνης

Τα δύο τμήματα της αποστολής LCROSS συνετρίβησαν με υπερηχητική ταχύτητα στο νότιο πόλο της Σελήνης το απόγευμα της Παρασκευής, σε μια εντυπωσιακή αυτοκτονία που επέτρεψε στη NASA να αναζητήσει νερό στα σύννεφα των συντριμμιών.

Ο άδειος πύραυλος Centaur, βάρους 2,2 τόνων, προσέκρουσε στη λεκάνη του κρατήρα Cabeus στις 14.21 ώρα Ελλάδας, με ταχύτητα γύρω στα 9.000 χλμ/ώρα, και δημιούργησε ένα νέφος σκόνης που εκτιμάται ότι είχε διάμετρο 20 χλμ και ύψος 10 χλμ.

Η συσκευή οργάνων LCROSS, από την οποία είχε απελευθερωθεί ο χρησιμοποιημένος πύραυλος, πέρασε μέσα από τα συντρίμμια, μεταδίδοντας συνεχώς εικόνες και μετρήσεις, και συνετρίβη στο ίδιο σημείο τέσσερα λεπτά μετά την πρώτη πρόσκρουση.

Η πρώτη και ισχυρότερη πρόσκρουση απελευθέρωσε ενέργεια ισοδύναμη με 1,5 τόνους TNT και δημιούργησε έναν κρατήρα σε μέγεθος πισίνας ολυμπιακών διαστάσεων, ορατό στην υπέρυθρη κάμερα του LCROSS.

Ήταν πάντως δύσκολο να διακρίνει κανείς την πρόσκρουση ή τα συντρίμμια στις εικόνες πραγματικού χρώματος που μετέδιδε ζωντανά το NASA TV. «Είναι δύσκολο να πούμε τι ακριβώς είδαμε» σχολίασε ο παρουσιαστής μετά τους πρώτους πανηγυρισμούς και τις χειραψίες στο Ερευνητικό Κέντρο Ames της NASA.

Οι υπεύθυνοι της αποστολής θα αναλύσουν τώρα τα δεδομένα σε μια προσπάθεια να επιβεβαιώσουν τις υποψίες για την ύπαρξη πάγου σε κρατήρες του νότιου πόλου που παραμένουν μόνιμα στο σκοτάδι.

Πριν τελικά συντριβεί, η αποστολή LCROSS χαρτογράφησε το φεγγάρι και αναζήτησε τοποθεσίες κατάλληλες για προσσελήνωση.
Το σκάφος εκτοξεύτηκε τον Ιούνιο μαζί με τον Αναγνωριστικό Σεληνιακό Δορυφόρο (LRO), ο οποίος παραμένει σε τροχιά γύρω από τη Σελήνη.

Δεδομένα του LRO και δύο άλλων αποστολών αποκάλυψαν πριν από λίγες εβδομάδες ότι στην έρημο της σεληνιακής επιφάνειας υπάρχουν στην πραγματικότητα ίχνη νερού.

Το νερό πιστεύεται ότι προέρχεται από προηγούμενες προσκρούσεις κομητών που μετέφεραν πάγο.
Ο πάγος που ίσως κρύβεται στους πόλους θα ήταν σημαντικός φυσικός πόρος για τις μελλοντικές επανδρωμένες αποστολές -έπειτα από αρκετά χρόνια στην αφάνεια, το φεγγάρι φαίνεται τώρα να σαγηνεύει εκ νέου τα διαστημικά προγράμματα διαφόρων χωρών.

Κίνα, Ινδία και Ιαπωνία πραγματοποίησαν πρόσφατα τις πρώτες αποστολές τους σε τροχιά γύρω από τη Σελήνη, με την προοπτική να συνεχίσουν με ρομποτικές σεληνακάτους αλλά και επανδρωμένες αποστολές.
Οι ΗΠΑ, από την πλευρά τους, προγραμματίζουν την επιστροφή τους στη Σελήνη με το σκάφος Orion για το 2024.
