Τουλάχιστον τα μισά από τα παιδιά που γεννιούνται σήμερα στις πλούσιες χώρες θα ζήσουν μέχρι την ηλικία των 100 ετών, αν συνεχιστεί η τάση αύξησης του προσδόκιμου επιβίωσης, εκτιμούν Γερμανοί και Δανοί ερευνητές στην έγκριτη βρετανική επιθεώρηση The Lancet.

Ο μεγάλος αριθμός των υπερηλίκων θα αποτελέσει μεν σημαντική πρόκληση για το σύστημα υγείας και ασφάλισης, το θετικό όμως είναι ότι οι άνθρωποι όχι μόνο θα ζουν περισσότερο αλλά θα παραμένουν και πιο υγιείς σε μεγάλη ηλικία.
Στη διάρκεια του 20ού αιώνα, η μέση διάρκεια ζωής αυξήθηκε στις ανεπτυγμένες χώρες κατά 30 χρόνια και η τάση αναμένεται να συνεχιστεί, εκτιμά ο Κόρε Κρίστενσεν του Ερευνητικού Κέντρου Τρίτης Ηλικίας της Δανίας.

«Αν συνεχιστεί στον 21ο αιώνα ο ρυθμός αύξησης που καταγράφεται στις ανεπτυγμένες χώρες τους τελευταίος δύο αιώνες, τα περισσότερα βρέφη που γεννιούνται μετά το 2000 στη Γαλλία, τη Γερμανία, την Ιταλία, τις ΗΠΑ, τη Βρετανία, τον Καναδά, την Ιαπωνία και άλλες χώρες με μεγάλο προσδόκιμο ζωής θα γιορτάσουν τα 100ά τους γενέθλια» γράφουν οι ερευνητές.

Η μελέτη βασίστηκε σε ανασκόπηση επιστημονικών δημοσιεύσεων για τη γήρανση το διάστημα 2004-2005.
Οι ερευνητές μελέτησαν την περίπτωση της Γερμανίας, και διαπίστωσαν ότι το 2050 ο πληθυσμός της θα είναι μικρότερος σε σχέση με σήμερα και μεγαλύτερης ηλικίας, μια κατάσταση που θα είναι τυπική στις πλούσιες χώρες.

Αυτό όμως σημαίνει ότι το εργατικό δυναμικό των πλούσιων χωρών θα πρέπει να σηκώνει ένα ολοένα και μεγαλύτερο φορτίο συντάξεων και περίθαλψης για τους ηλικιωμένους.
Πολλές κυβερνήσεις στις αναπτυγμένες χώρες στρέφονται σήμερα προς την αύξηση του ορίου συνταξιοδότησης ώστε να αντιμετωπίσουν το πρόβλημα της γήρανσης του πληθυσμού.

Οι ερευνητές εκτιμούν πάντως ότι η αύξηση του ορίου συνταξιοδότησης θα μπορούσε να συνδυαστεί με μείωση του ωραρίου εργασίας.
«Εάν οι άνθρωποι ηλικίας 60-70 ετών δουλεύουν περισσότερο απ' ότι σήμερα, τότε περισσότεροι άνθρωποι θα επωφεληθούν από λιγότερες ώρες εργασίας την εβδομάδα.

Οι πρώτες ενδείξεις δείχνουν ότι η μικρότερη εβδομάδα εργασίας σε μακρύτερο διάστημα απασχόλησης μπορεί να συμβάλλει στην επιμήκυνση του προσδόκιμου ζωής και στην καλύτερη υγεία» γράφουν στην έρευνά τους.
