Αποστολή της NASA για δημιουργία αποικίας στη Σελήνη

Σαράντα χρόνια μετά το «μικρό βήμα» του Νιλ Άρμστρονγκ στην επιφάνεια της Σελήνης, η ΝΑSΑ ξεκίνησε τα μεσάνυχτα της Πέμπτης το ταξίδι με προορισμό τη δημιουργία ανθρώπινης αποικίας στον δορυφόρο της Γης. Η αποστολή μεταφέρει δύο διαστημικά αναγνωριστικά οχήματα στο φεγγάρι, με στόχο να βρουν το πολυπόθητο νερό και πιθανές τοποθεσίες για την αποικία, το όνειρο κάθε συγγραφέα επιστημονικής φαντασίας.
«Θα βρούμε όλες τις πληροφορίες που χρειάζεται η ΝΑSΑ για να ξαναστείλει ανθρώπους στη Σελήνη και να μείνουν εκεί για μεγάλο διάστημα», λέει ο Κρεγκ Τούλι, υπεύθυνος για το Όχημα Σεληνιακής Αναγνώρισης, το οποίο έχει αναλάβει το πρώτο μέρος της αποστολής.
Το όχημα θα χαρτογραφήσει την επιφάνεια της Σελήνης με τη μεγαλύτερη δυνατή ακρίβεια και θα δει για πρώτη φορά τους κρατήρες στους δύο πόλους, που βρίσκονται διαρκώς στο σκοτάδι. Μέσα σε αυτούς τους κρατήρες, οι επιστήμονες ελπίζουν να βρουν παγωμένο νερό, που έχει μείνει εκεί κρυμμένο για δισεκατομμύρια χρόνια.

Δεύτερο διαστημόπλοιο.
Η αποστολή όμως δεν τελειώνει εκεί. Με ένα δεύτερο διαστημόπλοιο- τον δορυφόρο παρατήρησης σεληνιακών κρατήρων- η ΝΑSΑ θα τρυπήσει έναν κρατήρα για να δει τι περιέχει. Τα δύο διαστημόπλοια θα εκτοξευτούν μαζί με έναν πύραυλο. Σε τέσσερις μήνες, ένα τμήμα του πυραύλου θα πέσει στη Σελήνη δημιουργώντας έναν κρατήρα διαμέτρου 20 μέτρων και βάθους τεσσάρων. Το αποτέλεσμα της σύγκρουσης θα είναι ένα σύννεφο από θραύσματα που θα φτάσει σε ύψος 10 χλμ., το οποίο θα είναι ορατό από τη Γη με ερασιτεχνικά τηλεσκόπια. «Θα είναι μία πολύ θεαματική σύγκρουση για όλους μας», λέει ο Τόνι Κολαπρέτι, υπεύθυνος για τον δορυφόρο.
Τα σχέδια για την αποικία στο φεγγάρι ανακοίνωσε ο Τζορτζ Μπους το 2004, όταν πρότεινε την επιστροφή του ανθρώπου στη Σελήνη μέχρι το 2020. Η βάση θα χρησιμεύσει ως σταθμός προετοιμασίας και ανεφοδιασμού για τις αποστολές στον Άρη και σε άλλα σημεία του Διαστήματος.
Μία ώρα μετά την εκτόξευση του διαστημικού λεωφορείου, το αναγνωριστικό όχημα θα αποδεσμευτεί από τον δορυφόρο και τον πύραυλο. Ύστερα από πέντε μέρες πτήσης θα μπει σε τροχιά 45 χλμ. από την επιφάνεια της Σελήνης, η οποία στην πραγματικότητα παραμένει μια άγνωστη περιοχή για τον άνθρωπο. Οι αποστολές του προγράμματος Απόλλων εξερεύνησαν κυρίως την περιοχή γύρω από τον ισημερινό της Σελήνης. «Το υπόλοιπο φεγγάρι δεν το ξέρουμε καλά. Έχουμε πολύ καλύτερες φωτογραφίες από τον Άρη από ό,τι από τη Σελήνη», λέει ο Τούλι.

Ελλιπή στοιχεία.
Ειδικά στους δύο πόλους, οι χάρτες είναι ελλιπείς και ανακριβείς. Αυτό είναι ένα πρόβλημα, καθώς τα σχέδια της ΝΑSΑ τοποθετούν την αποικία σε έναν από τους πόλους, όπου κάποια σημεία βρίσκονται διαρκώς στο φως και κάποια στο σκοτάδι. Η ηλιοφάνεια είναι απαραίτητη για την παραγωγή ενέργειας στη βάση. Οι περιοχές που βρίσκονται στο σκοτάδι ίσως κρύβουν στρώματα πάγου ηλικίας μερικών δισεκατομμυρίων ετών.
Αυτός ο πάγος θα είναι πολύτιμος, όχι μόνο για τα αποθέματα νερού αλλά και για την παραγωγή οξυγόνου, το οποίο μπορεί να χρησιμεύσει και ως πυραυλικό καύσιμο για τα ταξίδια στη Γη.
Κανείς όμως δεν ξέρει αν υπάρχει πάγος στη Σελήνη. Το μόνο που ξέρουμε είναι τα δεδομένα που έδωσε μία αποστολή το 1998, η οποία εντόπισε μεγάλα αποθέματα υδρογόνου στους κρατήρες, όπου η θερμοκρασία είναι μονίμως χαμηλότερη από τους 160 βαθμούς υπό το μηδέν. Πάντως, άλλες αποστολές με δορυφόρους δεν έχουν καταφέρει να βρουν νερό.

Η ΝΑSΑ δεν έχει αποφασίσει ακόμα σε ποιον κρατήρα θα στείλει το αναγνωριστικό όχημα. Αυτό θα γίνει περίπου ένα μήνα πριν από την πρόσκρουση, αφού μελετήσει τα δεδομένα τα οποία θα έχει συγκεντρώσει στο μεταξύ η αποστολή.

Αν πάντως υπάρχει νερό στη Σελήνη, οι επιστήμονες είναι σίγουροι πως θα το βρουν με αυτή την αποστολή. Πρώτα, ο Κένταυρος, που είναι ο πύραυλος ο οποίος θα μεταφέρει τα οχήματα. Αφού γυρίσει γύρω από τη Γη με μεγάλη ταχύτητα για να πάρει φόρα και αφού εξαντλήσει τα καύσιμά του, ο πύραυλος θα πέσει στην επιφάνεια της Σελήνης, στον κρατήρα του στόχου. Η πρόσκρουση θα σηκώσει ένα τεράστιο νέφος από θραύσματα και σκόνη.

Τέσσερα λεπτά αργότερα, ο δορυφόρος που τον συνοδεύει θα πετάξει μέσα από το σύννεφο μετρώντας τη χημική του σύσταση και βιντεοσκοπώντας το με υπέρυθρες κάμερες. Μετά, θα πέσει κι αυτό στην επιφάνεια σε κοντινό σημείο. Κι από ψηλά, το όχημα αναγνώρισης θα παρακολουθεί τα πάντα, μαζί με τους χιλιάδες επαγγελματίες και ερασιτέχνες αστρονόμους από τη Γη. Σύμφωνα με τον σχεδιασμό της ΝΑSΑ, η κατασκευή των υλικών που θα αποτελέσουν τα θεμέλια της διαστημικής βάσης θα αρχίσει το 2013. Η βάση θα βρίσκεται σε απόσταση τριών ημερών από τη Γη και, σύμφωνα με τις πιο αισιόδοξες εκτιμήσεις, θα μπορεί να φιλοξενεί ανθρώπους για διάστημα 6 μηνών.
